SPAM?" and "Why don't we make it illegal?"
The answer to the second question is quick and simple, SPAM is illegal. Which leads us to the second question. This issue is longer and more involved.
If you were to investigate the emails sent to you as SPAM, you would notice that most of them come from out side the United States. This is because it is illegal to send SPAM in the United States. The "illegal" issue becomes clear. Other countries are making a lot of money sending SPAM to us and they are not bound by our laws.
What about SPAM filters, can't someone make one that works better? There is big money behind SPAM. You can imagine that there is a great deal of effort being put into how to get around SPAM filters. That is really all the SPAM companies have to think about all day. We do have people in this country thinking about how to create better SPAM filters, but the fight is unfair.
What can you do about SPAM? Use an email program which allows you to apply "rules" or "filters" to your email. Work on creating rules which will filter your SPAM into a separate folder. The tighter you make the rules, the more "real" email you will lose. If you keep it in a separate folder for a week or a month, when you get that call, "Did you get my email?", you can look back in your SPAM folder and see if an important email went there.
If you are in a position to do so, there are very strict email filtering companies where people who want to email you must first register with them.
This does put a barrier up between you and potential clients, so take care if you use this method.
